Weird film on the surface of betta's water?

I've seen multiple posts about this odd "protein buildup" issue, but it is usually for people who don't have a filter (like my 1.5 gal, I see it there all the time) & tanks with very little current...

The 5 gal I am currently cycling, I have removed the airstone & pump because it was too strong for such a small tank (& for a small betta) but the filter's (my filter came w/ the Aqueon Mini Bow) current seems too gentle...

It barely disrupts the surface!

I know it will be less stressful on my betta, but even after a quick PWC, the next day the film returns!!! Just as ugly & distasteful as always.

Please help, what can I do?

I know it's annoying, but harmless. Use paper towels to get rid of it. Works most of the time. :) BTW, I freakin' love your avatar pic. Fat squirrels! <3

Thank you for replying so quickly! & yes, I love my squirrels... I didn't think my little avatar would fit in with the rest of all these bettas, but I couldn't seem to upload my own picture let alone FIND ONE that was 200x200pixels!

I tried that, but in the end I always get extra dust in my tank, & the film comes back everyday!

Yes!!! But it's not due to fish food or anything like that, since I'm doing a fishless cycle & using pure ammonia...

I was told it was because I feed live food???

I do not get it on my fluval chi as there is a slight movement on the surface of the water, however in my cube the filter is submersed and does not affect the surface of the water and I get a film on there, if I turn my filter so it points upwards the film disappears

staffylover, the filter that came w/ my Aqueon Mini Bow can't be turned up or any other direction w/o being broken!

I have the same film and I just ignore it
