Question Is my guy TOO active?

My newest boy is incredibly active. He's always bashing into the side of his tank, swimming up and down like crazy, etc. He's a dark blue and other than a bit of fading on his fins, there are no spots or damage or anything. I got him from Pet Valu and he was in a tiny Dixie cup so small he couldn't even straighten his body. I've had him for 3 days now.

Is this normal? Is something wrong or is he just happy to be able to swim?

Is he "surfing" the edge of the tank?

Or is he flaring and attacking the tank?

Sometimes, bettas patrol their areas by tank surfing, which is swimming againt the edge of the tank.

Flaring is when the gills expand and the betta spreads out his fins. This is often done when the betta sees an enemy, or maybe its reflection.

Here is a pic of flaring

Yeah, I kind of thought maybe he saw his reflection (it has funny edges) and was driving himself crazy. His gills sometimes are out a little bit, but his fins are usually normal. He has very large, beautiful black gills, but they're only out if I hold a mirror up to him.

Well that's a relief lol Thank you! I'm in the process of trying to find him a 5 gal tank, but they're ridiculously expensive! His little one gallon is still better than a Dixie cup. I'm glad he's "happy" instead of sick!
