Betta got sucked into filter - badly injured

My betta Spica got sucked into the filter today some time between 5:30 and 10:00. He was still alive when I found him, and I was able to get him out of the intake where he was stuck. His fins are very badly torn (he's almost completely missing his bottom fin), and his back is stretched and bent. His side is swollen and red. I'm pretty sure he has some sort of internal injury - he's swimming sideways and is having a hard time swimming to the surface.

Is there anything I can do for him? Thank you very much.

Spica is still in shock from injuries. Use stress coat and bettafix will help repair the fins. If you have a heater keep the water at 80 degrees. Just monitor Spica's behavior for a few days. Hopefully all will be well. Quite a few people in this forum has suggested covering the filter with a piece of pantyhose to prevent fish from being sucked into the filter. If your filter is adjustable you can lower the pressure or also try putting decorations/plants around it, or even covering it with a sponge.

Unfortunately, Spica died about an hour ago. I guess his injuries were just too severe. This is the second fish I've lost this way; the last one was my very first betta. The moral of the story is, never think that because a filter is very weak (I could barely feel suction on my finger from the intake tube), it's okay to leave off the grate attachment.

Rest in peace, little Spica.

I'm so sorry, Mame. It does sound like Spica got an internal injury, judging from your description. :( There probably wasn;t much you could do except make him comfortable.
