You could use any kind of larva available in your area - mosq, fruit fly, or other insects. You could even use ant/termite larva or eggs. They all work for conditioning.

Mid Spring would be a good time to set the buckets outside. Hopefully by summer you will have tons of tiny critters. I don't think you can culture them during winter.
