Thermometer placement?

This might be a dumb question but do I put my thermometer right by my heater or should I put it away from my heater? I have it away from it, but I wasn't sure. Thank you

then you have it in the right position. you always want the thermometer farthest from the heater so you can see the absolute lowest tank temperature

Away from it I would think so when the water is heating it doesnt throw off the reading. I always put mine in the middle of the tank over to the side and my heater is on the far side of . Hope this helps !

Is it better to place the thermometer at the bottom, middle, or top of the tank? I was thinking the bottom might be the best since, in theory, it should be the coldest spot.

Also where/how is the best place to put your heater?

Should be near the middle. It's for the heat to 'travel' around the tank.

The heater should be placed wherever you can place it. Read the directions carefully, because some heaters will malfunction (and at worst, explode) if placed on or under the gravel. Some should be placed horizontally, some vertically, and some will be fine in either direction. Also, all cylindrical-shaped heaters have a minimum water line that they must be submerged past. I agree that the thermometer should be as far away from the heater as possible to give you an accurate reading of the tank's minimum temperature.

Personally, I put my heater in the back filter compartment of my Fluval Spec, so I may not be too helpful compared to other members who have tanks without filter compartments.
