Talking Stupid question

Hello again!

I have what may be a rather dumb question, but here goes: What is the best way to clean an aquarium siphon? Both my siphons were last used with unhealthy fish. We just got two new bettas, and I need to do a water change, but I don't want anything from the old siphons to jeopardize our new guys. Any ideas?

actually it depends on what the fish were sick with.... cant remember what disease it was, but you had to throw away everything it came into contact with... but assuming that all the fish recovered hot water and vinegar should be fine, i personally wouldnt boil my stuff cause im too afraid of anything melting haha

I was never actually sure what Peanut Butter had. It might have been columnaris, but not definitively. There are some older posts of mine up with regards to that. He did eventually recover, although we're not completely sure why or how.

Anyway, since I have two siphons, maybe I'll vinegar one and boil the other and see which one survives. That one will be the winner.

The pH in the tanks has dropped to about 6.2. I've done a partial water change (using a measuring cup. Talk about inefficient!) and I'm keeping a watchful eye on things.

Thanks for all your help! I'll let you know what happens!

A pH of 6.2 seems unusually low for the NYC area. What's up with your water?

Thank you, Tami! My 11-year-old daughter named them. She's a hardcore Beatles fan. She takes after her parents, thank goodness!

As far as the water goes, it was fine when the fish went in, but the pH has been dropping slowly. I changed out about half of the water and it came up a bit, but it's still not where I'd like it to be. We'll keep working on it.

Tami, one of my daughter's favorite Beatles songs is "Rain". Yours?

Put the siphon in a plastic bag and stick it in the freezer for 2 days. That will kill all bacteria that is warm-water-loving.

favorite song....hmmm, gotta be In My Life.
Across the universe is my all time fave movie. The rewritting of the songs was pure genius!

I'm actually going to see a Beatles tribute band that is playing tonight down the street from my house. And in a month there is a Beatlesfest. 4 Beatles tribute bands! I can't wait.
