pH and High Range pH

I tested my water (during fishless cycling), using the API Master Test Kit.

I have a pH level of 7.6 (the maximum on the card so I guess it could be higher)

I have a "High Range" pH of 8.2.

So - does that just mean I have a pH of 8.2, or are these two separate things?

What should my pH and/or High Range pH register?

The prevailing thought is that bettas adapt to almost any ph so don't worry about it. Also, never use any ph altering chemicals. They aren't good but I forgot why

My ph is also very high, maybe 8 or over.

pH-lowering chemicals are essentially acid, so you could potentially burn your poor betta's fins off. Plus, if you were to use the chemicals, you would have to ensure that your dosage and your water's stats are exactly the same each time you make a water change, which is nearly impossible to do.

Rosebud, if you want to lower your pH, then the best way to go about it would be to buy a piece of driftwood. The tannins released would stain your water brown, but would lower the pH gradually and safely.

Your pH is 8.2. The high range test should be used if your regular test comes out at the maximum value, 7.6. So from now on use the high range test.
