A torn fin...what should I do?

I woke up this morning and observed my betta moving around slightly more which made me very happy. Then, I noticed that one of his fins is torn. I'm thinking maybe the filter I have has too high of a current and that caused it. I'm considering changing the filter, but is there anything else I need to do?

keep the water super clean, keep up on the water changes and don't let the ammonia build up. If you do that it should "zip" itself back up in a week or so

Thanks so much! I didn't know that they could do that, so that's really great to hear!

As long as its not black and rotten looking at the edges, which from the sounds of it, it isn't then your good. Just keep an eye on it. If it does start getting "rotted" looking then you've got a case of finrot, but that's easily treatable. If you really feel the need to speed it up, add Stress Coat dosed to repair fins and replace slime coat (directions on the back of the bottle). It should "zip" itself up in under a week then.

No, it's not black or anything, but I will definitely keep an eye on it. I've only had the little guy for 3 days and he's finally starting to move around the tank a bit more today, so I'm hoping he's finally adjusting!

yeah he's just adjusting. Congratz on the new little guy. ripped fins are pretty easy to care for lol. I'm happy he's healthy, I've heard of a lot of people getting sick fish recently

When Cole was new, he blew his dorsal fin. I was all 'ohno!' and 30 seconds later it zipped up again. Then he flared, and his tail blew a hole. Same deal, a few mins later it was okay again.

I think it's just weak fins from being in those dinky store cups too long. Cole flares at -everything- the cat, Daughter's pajamas, the TV... and never blows his fins anymore.

Good advice above, clean water and an eye on it. :)

D'ah bugger! I noticed mine might have torn his fin today also, so I bought the aquarium salt. Is there any point in using it? I dunno how the hell he did it. He has been acting a little odd lately too.

You can if you really feel you need to, it will speed things up a bit. Just don't use for over 10 days with the salts
