Please Help! Filter suddenly stopped working!

I did the weekly 50% water change in my 10 gallon tank today, and as always, I unplugged the filter. When I went to plug it back in, it wouldn't come on at all. There no sound at all. What do I do? What about the tank's cycle?!

There is not much you can do if the filter stopped working. The fish will be fine for one night since you just did a 50% water change. I am not sure how long you had the filter but if its less than 90 days you can take it back to the LPS (assuming its one of the larger stores like PetSmart) and exchange it.

What kind of filter do you have?

FIRST, check the impeller in the filter because it could be clogged with hair or something.

If that still doesn't work, hopefully you still have the receipt like KG suggested, bring it back to the store.

You should have about a week to figure it out.

But save the media & so forth to preserve the good bacteria.

Thanks for the responses! Fortunately, it started working, but only after I put it in a bucket of water and shook it around a bit. I've had the tank and filter (HOB that came with the 10 gallon tank) up and running for about a year. I was mainly worried about what to do to preserve the cycle. Also, what part is the impeller?

Tell the name and model of the filter.

The filters I use have a impeller. It looks like a torpedo/missle. It's basically a magnet with fins attached that creates the suction for the water.

If your filter's been running for a year, you may want to check the impeller for hair/animal hair that's wrapped around it.

Usually filters DON'T stop running for no reason.
