When I planted a pair of avocado pits, I put the pots in the bathroom to keep the cats out of them. Same room that newfish is currently in and the others have been when they were in quarantine. the plants are about two feet high and doing fine, but I think they sprouted gnats too. Seriously, no idea where the gnats came from, but I spy a couple a day in there.
They seem to make great Betta snacks, if my fellows are any indication. Just wanted to make sure there isn't any known issue with Bettas eating little winged bugs

(Their ancestors were bugavores in nature, right?)
