Does anyone have a good picture of ammonia burns or red gills?

I hear this term a lot but I would like to see a good picture of what these look like.

  • My bettas are all very healthy, voracious eaters, extremely playful & curious.

Ammonia in their temporary quarters are always under 1.0ppm but usually more like .25ppm-.50ppm when I run the tests.

Also I've heard members mention the ammonia can get very HIGH in little cups.

Exactly how high of a reading would cause a betta to suffer what people refer to as ammonia burns?

  • Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me a definitive answer.

To make ammonia burns, I think the ammonia has to be at least 2.0ppm? Even a small trace of ammonia can already start hurting the fish. I think it's like radiation to them but not THAT bad. It's bad but, you get the point. If its in high levels, you get very sick. Same for ammonia.
