Moss balls are actually a species of algae, I personally bought mine in the hope that they would help keep algae populations down by out-competing with it. Of course, I only have four relatively small ones in my betta tank (two in each side) so I'm not sure how effective they are but I've heard numerous stories of bettas loving to play around with them and even sleep on them.
Mine haven't paid much attention, Kaze much prefers his moss pads for "snuggle fodder" than his moss balls but I think they're a lovely little plant and add an element of something different to the tank.
