for your avatar click "user CP" in the upper left hand area of your screen. On the left side there is a menu bar and about half way down it says "Edit avatar"
For adding photos to a post there is a "post quick reply" and "go advanced" if you go advanced you get more options under the text box. If you scroll down there will be a section called "attach files" in that is a button called "manage attachments" if you click on that a new screen pops up. from there you just "choose a file" and "upload".
