Sudden cloudy-white water and a bad odor?

Hi,
I have a male Betta. I've had him for a few months now and it has been absolutely perfect in his tank - clear water and a happy Betta with bubble nests every day.

Over the past couple days, it seems to have dropped drastically and I can't figure out why. The water is cloudy-white and it smells terrible. I've done a 50% water change every day since I noticed this, but it still continues to become cloudy and smelly over a 24-hr period.

The only difference that's been made since the sour conditions have come on, is that I introduced a baby black mystery snail that I acquired for free from my pet store workplace.

I am going to take a water sample in to work and test it tomorrow, but I am worried about my Betta and don't want to see him belly up, so I am just wondering if any of you might know why the conditions have so suddenly become so poor. Is the snail the cause?

Snail might be the problem... did you quarantine before introducing him to the tank? Snails can bring all sorts of nasties, specially from petstore tanks.

I'd say it's a substrate problem. How often/deeply do you vac the gravel, if any? How deep is it? Do you have plants in there/large ornaments?

If the tank is that newly set up, you may be experiencing a a bacterial bloom. Check your water parameters daily and if everything is ok, the fish will be fine in there and the tank will clear on its own.

How big is the tank? I'd take the snail out for the time being and see if the problem clears up.
