It depends. Some people make a tea and don't use the whole leaf in their tanks. Some add the leaf for spawning so the male can make a bubblenest below it, but the leaf eventually does become waterlogged and sink on its own. You can generally keep the leaf around until it starts decaying molding or rotting or falling apart in some way.

If you're using a leaf in a very small tank you probably don't need to use a whole leaf. The leaves I have release quite a bit of tannins even with smaller pieces.

I'm not an expert on IAL but i'm sure someone will come along to answer your questions better then I can.

Here are a couple websites with interesting info though.

thank you TS. What if you use too much of leaf? I put a huge leaf into a 2 gal container. Is too much of a good thing bad?

It makes not difference, tan.
The water will just get darker. I usually just tear off a piece and put it un the container for those that I do constant water changes on.
For my filter tanks I'm not currently using it because the floating plants you gave me keep the tank dakr and my bottom plants would get no light wihth the IAL. When I did use it, I would just let the leaf rot in there.
For my unclyced 2.5 galons, I usually use the whole leaf and will rinse it when doing a water change. I will use it 1-2 times depending on how much tannins is releasing.
