20 Gallon

Tomorrow I buy my first 20 gallon tank.

I have my own well researched specs but I would love to hear what the forum has to say.

Which tank should I get?
Which filter (there will be a single male betta in there)?
Which heater?
What else?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely get a 20L over a 20H! For filtration, if you're going HOB, I'd go Aquaclear. Don't really have huge preferences for heaters. Will the single betta be the only inhabitant of the tank?

I am hoping to put together a community tank with a variety of compatible fish and/or invertebrates.

Have to cycle the tank first so it is a while until I stock it but I would of course appreciate suggestions on stocking.

Seriously looking for some input - let's say you were going to buy a 20gal tomorrow - what would your shopping list be?

Pardon my ignorance but would you mind expounding on the abbreviations that you used? Thanks in advance!

20 gallon tanks generally come in 2 dimensions. 20L = 20 long, 20H = 20 high. 20L tanks are better for bettas because they allow for more horizontal swimming room. HOB = hang on back (filters).

Get a 20L tank with a hob filter with flow rate of 100(baffle it), and 100 watt heater, decorations/hiding spaces for your community, right type of food that'll accommodate the whole tank (i say new life spectrum community pellets will be good) etc.... Good luck with community set up!!!
