No one is trying to be purposely negative. It is just incorrect to say Betta fish make them out of happiness, nor is it a correct way to gauge their health. I've had ones that are ill in a hospital tank and they build a nest. I also had a rescue that had a nasty case of velvet that build a nest before he passed away.

It's also not a good indication as to the quality of your water. Really, the only way to tell whether your water is to test it. Even then, depending on the age and type of test you use this is really only a ballpark estimate.

I've had fish swimming around in tanks with ammonia present and they have appeared perfectly normal. It wasn't until 1-2 weeks down the track when they suddenly started dying off that I thought to check my water and found what the problem was.

Personally, I think bubblenests do show a comfort level. After all, how many do you see in those cups they keep them in at pet stores? But, to each his or her own.

Actually, I've seen Bettas make them in bad conditions. I've seen them make bubblenests in my Petsmart. The cups are a bit dirty, but they still make them. Bubblenests don't show any comfort level at all, just instinct. It's a fact, not an opinion.

Just saying, I have seen bettas in like a pint of water, making a nest. What I have found in my 16 years of life is people will always have a personal opinion, but it is not always right. (Not being mean, just what I have found out).

I think OFL recommends 1 50% change weekly and 1 100% weekly water change on a 1.5 gallon.

DQ, I believe that is what OFL recommends, but you should always test the water in doubt...

So remember when in doubt, test it!

I thought bubblenests were made by males to mark their territory.

Oh, yes, it's a good idea to test it. I check mine for ammonia every once in awhile. Lol

Yes, it is. It's also for breeding, (Obvious lol) and instinct.
