staying at top of the tank?

I just got my fish yesterday and he's been very active. I hadn't seen him really stay still at all, but when I got home tonight he was just floating there at the top of the water. I tapped on the tank and he moved a little bit then he got still again. not even his little side fins were moving. Was he sleeping? It was dark before I came in. He's swimming around some now, but he's staying at the top, mostly... His water is 80 degrees. Is this too warm? Is it normal for him to rest and stay at the top of the water without moving? I put his leaf hammock in there earlier today, but he's not using it... I don't know if I'm just being paranoid... I've had two bettas in the past, but I didn't know better at the time and I had them both in small tanks, so it wasn't as noticeable if they just stayed at the top because it wasn't much different from being in the middle.
Well, he just ate a few pellets so he must be ok. Any advice? Thanks!

Must've been sleeping. The temperature is great for him. Is he alert or sluggish and lethargic?

he's alert and moving a lot.
I just tested the ammonia and it's 0.25. Is this too high?

You mean ammonia? You can do a change if you want. He was probably sleeping.

OrangeAugust, you are doing a great job so far with your new betta! Just an FYI, try to keep the ammonia level as close to 0 (or at 0) as you can by doing frequent water changes. Since he is in a 1 gallon tank right now, you should be doing water changes about 2-3 times per week.

How much do you feed him every time you feed? 2 pellets a day is sufficient for a betta fish. I have one that only gets one every other day, but he is a special case :)
