well water questions

Is it iron that turns it brown? I still use conditioner because it nuetralizes more than just chlorine of course lol. But a scentless brown water gushed from the bathtub faucet during my fish room chore.

Also is there any problems with well VS city water?

Right now I'm living with well water and we have this water softener that if it goes haywire, stops working, or needs to be changed the water gets slimy and brown and gross. I was told the brown is rust but my roommate is not the brightest blub so I'm honestly not too sure what makes it brown...but since I heard its not good for people to use brown water it wouldn't be wise for betta i think...def look into using some sort of water softener...

No idea, is it a dirty brown or a reddish brown?

At my parents house we use well water, and we have high iron. But it tends to turn things more of an orange than a brown. I'm growing cacti there (its warmer), and the perlite that's in the mixed soil went from white to a really dark orange pretty quickly.
