Would a little chunk of banana harm the betta

Went away for a couple days and notice there's a lot of fruit flies hanging out in the kitchen.

I moved some of the injured girls into the kitchen around dinner time and the population seems to be increasing.

  • The flies aren't stupid enough to just go into the betta tank, so I was wondering if I could toss a little slice of banana peel in there to lure them inside?

I'm assuming the bettas will snatch them out of the air.

Anyone tried this before?

I don't really want to make a vinegar/wine ffly trap and feed the girls vinegar/wine laced flies.

  • I'm going to grab some bananas from the trunk of my car right now.

How about one of those little insect nets from the dollar store?

It would deteriorate in the tank and cause water quality issues. You could try and float a small piece in like a bottle cap or something (test in a separate container before adding with the weight of the banana).

The girls are not in a full sized tank. They're in small hospital tanks.

I have to change the water anyway, so I figured why not. Neat little experiment.

No, these are FRUIT flies. Not horse/dog flies.

I think the banana in the bottle trap would work the best.

I saw the f-flies go inside the tanks, but not close enough to the water.

The girls seem to be more interested in swimming through the banana peels than leaping out of the water for f-flies.

Pog LOVES banana! One thing is that if you leave it in it will cloud the water, but that is mostly aesthetics ^_^ It can also lower the Ph dramatically if you use too much. 4 slices of banana in a 20 gallon made all my fish sick and I couldn't figure out why untill I tested the Ph! LORD! It was like 6. So yeah, take it easy ^_^ btw, bettas rarely will jump for flies, so unless they land ON the water...

Banana peel in the water was a horrible idea.

Everything is getting this coating of slime.

I'm going to have to rinse the plants and toss them in with the rosy barbs for some cleaning.

POG..... your betta actually eats bananas?

My rosy barbs won't even go NEAR a slice of banana.

I have to setup the bottle trap tonight.

They're too busy flaring at each other to catch flies.
