Eating Habits

I was wondering about how you should feed a betta fish, and what their natural eating habits would be. Should I feed my betta once a day, or several times throughout the day with fewer pellets in meals? Is there a good time to feed them? I feed my male betta, Blu, Aqueon Betta Food (pellets), if that detail helps.

Hi :)
It helps to feed them on a regular schedule and they will come to know when food comes.. I'm less organized than that and feed them whenever. You can feed once a day for 7 days a week or twice a day for 6 days a week (fasting them for a day).
Variety is key too. I have aqueon, omega one, attison's, and frozen bloodworms. They get something different every day :)

It's always a personal perference. I feed my betta's twice a day Once in the morning and once in the evening, but no more than 5 pellets. I also use the micro pellets which are smaller and easier for them to eat and digest.

So from what I've picked up, it's just a matter of making sure you feed them on schedule, feed a variety, and if you feed them more then you have to balance that out with fasting?

Correct, the key is variety in feeding. They get different nutrients in each food you give. Fasting will make sure no build up in the digestive system. Which means, they have a lower chance of bloat.

If you want to completely replicate their natural feeding schedule you would feed multiple (5-6) small feedings daily as wild Betta species eat/seek food almost continuously throughout the day. This isn't really practical, so most of us feed bettas 2-3 times a day.

Yes, feeding Blu five times a day does seem impractical. I'm not at home all day, so twice a day seems better. How does 3 pellets two times a day with fasting once a week sound?
