Depression? Or Personality?

Hello, everyone!

Lately, one of my boys, Smaugstark (I couldn't decide between the names, and eventually they just stuck together!), has been listless. He's been facing one corner for ten minutes barely moving...then another...then another...sometimes, it's not a corner, but all he really does is listlessly float in place! He used to be aggressive, and follow my finger, etc... All of his conditions are fine, and the other boy in his divided tank (who he used to enjoy flaring at!) is absolutely fine and normal. Could this be a personality change, or could he be depressed? He has plenty to do! Lots of hiding places, live plants, and his favorite silk plant! Has anyone else experienced big personality changes like this?

Bettas don't have the mental capacity to be depressed or really have a set personality. He could be sick.

Bettas don't really get depressed. If he's lethargic, or "depressed" that is one of the first signs of an illness. I would keep an eye on him good. What size in your tank and how often do you change it?

What size is the divided tank? How long have you had him? Do they have a heater? Is he eating? There are some who believe they can get depressed. You might try moving the plants & deco's around next water change & see what that does. I usually redecorate pretty regularly, I think they like the change. They swim around like they got a new tank. Also, I have read that they can get stressed in a divided tank if they are able to see through the divider & being stressed all the time isn't good.
