Those are droplets of blood, possibly from finbiting or overflaring. If he's acting normally otherwise, just keep an eye on him and make sure the water stays clean to avoid infection. I had a VT who regularly got those but they didn't harm him. The black coloring, however, is normal. That's just him marbling.
