Did you try the teflon tape wrapped over the opening to make the hole smaller?

Not yet, as I've been away from my tanks for a few days. I might try it if he's still extremely stressed when I return. He seemed alright when I left, and had regained most of his color, so he might just be adjusting to the flow.
