Ahh puppy mills... Another reminder of how heartless some humans can be. That's great that you didn't buy anything from them! I'd look into it some more and try to see what those people are really hiding o.O

Snooping into their business isn't necessary. I'm sure they'll eventually be shut down.

I also hate how much they charge for a usually unpapered pup out of parents who probably live in squalid conditions and have not had any necessary health checks prior to breeding.

I saw a pet store near here selling normal 'get-me-at-any-animal-shelter' kittens for like $600. They weren't even desexed. What a joke.

Also if someone espouses 'hybrid-vigour' in defence of all the designer breeds out there I am going to scream into my pillow. It is in the real of possibility for a pup to inherit the bad genes from both sides of its family. Our mutt from the RSPCA had her spine fuse and very bad arthritis in her back legs. No hybrid-vigour there unfortunately.

The trouble is people don't want to associate the cute little puppy in the window with the horror that is puppy farms. I mean honestly, what responsible breeder would ever sell their dog to a pet store where anyone with money can come in and buy it?

Or worse still, these same people know about puppy farms and get some deluded idea in their heads about 'rescuing' the puppy by paying full retail price. This of course boosts demand and prolongs the cycle of suffering by those dogs whose sole job it is in life to create more of these pet store pups.

I'm glad you chose not to support their store. I refuse to support stores that sell live animals like that. It should not be allowed in this day and age.

It takes some snooping to to shut them down though. Without looking into their business we wouldn't even know about these puppy mills.

Pugs, bulldogs, boston terriers etc.. Small nosed buggy eyed gremlin dogs have the potential to be ugly. They can have weird eyes staring in opposite directions and just look like the little freaks of nature that they are. Emma is an extremely cute pug though! You're a lucky one. And I know you'd love her either way. The pug who lives upstairs from me is a mix of mostly black and the tan and black colors so he's different than most pugs (and ohmygod I saw a brindle pug once)...I'm sorry if that's your breed of choice but I just thought I'd share why these dogs can be ugly. I know they're good dogs underneath though!
There was a Pet Unlimited here (under Pj's Pets) who sold "pure bred puppies and kittens". A lot of the puppies were sold to the people of the city but a lot of them ended up at the vets and psychologically even worse, my mom's friend inherited a really messed up mill pug who had to be euthanized in his own best interest because there was nothing they could do for his anxiety, depression and behavior problems (peeing and pooing uncontrollaby as an adult dog). It really is shocking and depressing. Fortunately, Pj's Pets stopped selling puppies in the Atlantic provinces a couple years ago (they claim it has nothing to do with the countless protests and irate customers poking their heads in asking about papers and the origins of the dogs). They don't support a local shelter adoption program like petsmart does though which still puts them under my books. They sell sick animals still, like 6 week old baby bunnies. . .

I had a pure bred cocker spaniel once and she was an absolute mess. Never had a sane molecule in her body. She was always anxious and high strong as can be. She hated small animals with a vengeance and would kill them whenever she could get at them (she killed a hamster and a pet bird of mine, plus she terrorized the two cats till they were afraid to come out of this one room). Never will I get another pure bred dog in my life! They aren't worth it.

Okay, I digress, but actually, a mutt has better health overall than a lot of pure breds, and is mentally more sound. They are hardier, live longer and are overall less temperamental. They simply don't have all those genetic problems associated with certain breeds because they have a broader genetic background, and thus a healthier one.

Sure the dogs at the pound all come from who knows where with who knows what behavioral issues. Not to say all dogs from the pound are like that, but a lot can be that way. If you actually get off your butt and look around for a good organization who knows what they are doing, they will hook you up with a dog that has been behaviorally assessed and approved for adoption.

Also, there are many, MANY, pure bred dogs at the pound and in animal adoption organizations. Don't just snub your nose at adopting a mutt because they aren't pure bred and don't have papers. I can't stand people who are like that. Those people are absolutely shallow and have no sense of comprehension on the scale of how many lovable perfect dogs, who just happen to not be a specific breed, are put down every single minute, because they don't have a loving home to go to.

Further more, a breed doesn't necessarily define a dog's personality. I have the experience to say its true. I've known pit bulls who were sweeter than apple pie a la mode and couldn't have been more perfect. Then there was that dang pure bred cocker spaniel I had, prettiest dog I've ever seen, short of an Irish setter, but she was as unpredictable as a volcano. Please, don't assume a dog breed will determine their personality. Its the dog individual dog that determines it, not the breed standard.
Sorry! I didn't mean to cause offense! That was my parents' oppinion, not mine. I did not just "snub my nose" at mutts; in fact I really like them. And believe me, we're not "shallow". My parents simply have a different oppinion to you. The dog we're getting is a cockapoo, which I'm sure you'll know, is a mix of a poodle and a cocker spaniel.

A cockerpoo is a mutt. Naming it cockerpoo is just a way to sell it. I know you know that but it's a mutt :p
