Filter Dilemma

My betta has tattered fins that keep getting worse, and I believe it is due to the filter. I tried baffling the intake with pantyhose, but the water got very cloudy as a result. Does anyone have any suggestions of ways I could baffle without affecting the filter's ability to filter the water properly? Or, does anyone have a recommendation of a new filter? I'd rather not replace the filter, but I may have to since his fins are getting more and more tattered.

List the equipment you're using.

I have to tinker with my filters when I get back in a few hours.

I'll give you some ideas when I get back.

I have an aquaeon mini-bow 2.5 gal tank and I currently use the filter that came with it.

I wouldn't buy a new filter, most won't fit into your tank without some sort of modification.

I'm not very familiar with that filter, but I'm assuming it's this one.

Do you have any plain unscented cotton balls around? Take a few and pull them apart slightly and wrap them around the intake tube. That will slow the flow of the filter so your betta's fins to heal up.

I've stopped using power filters with bettas. I have a rosetail, and he can't handle any current at all. I only use sponge filters in my betta tanks anymore. Very gentle but still provide the mechanical and biological filtration a betta tank needs. You can't find them at most pet stores, but Amazon sells them rather cheap.
