Yawning Betta

Hi there, I was watching Larry this morning ,and he was just swimming around, with the odd puff up at his reflection then all of a sudden it seemed like he was having a BIG yawn! He opened his mouth really wide, and closed it and carried on swimming around. Looked just like he was yawning... do they yawn? or what could this be... I have seen my goldfish do this too???

I've watched my bettas do this too, and I think they are yawning, I don't think its nothing more than they are just really tired. This also applies for the goldfish too, but I've seen them do it when they take a rock in their mouth too..

I don't recall where but I read that this is something they do to force water over their gills when they expell ammonia - I don't know if this is accurate but I think it's fascinating nonetheless. I've seen both my fish "yawn", too!

It's adorable isn't it? My CT's used to yawn a lot and it was so cute to see it. Lulu my VT doesn't do it period though.
