I have read that epsom salt plain unscented at 2 teaspoons a gallon helps reduce swelling. PM OldFishLady . She seems to be the fish wizard here. :)

If it's dropsy, you're supposed to use the epsom salt immediately to reduce the swelling.

I'm surprised only kya mentioned it out of everyone that responded.

That stuff is only about $0.50-$0.70/lb and it's got a ton of uses other than just treating fish.

Don't mix epsom salt with aquarium salt though.

Another name for epsom salt is pure magnesium sulphate, just in case you can't find anything titled "epsom salt", shouldn't have a problem though especially at a local pharmacy. Good luck! I hope he'll be okay...

He's gotten even worse since last night, bloated now, getting even more pineconed, and swollen. How much epsom salt for less then a half gal.?(I put him in shallow water in a smallish container

And remember not to get any scented ones. I've heard that there is some bad effect by them. Just get some Epsom Salt/magnesium sulphate that says it's unscented or it just says "Epsom Salt" or Magnesium Sulphate".

If you're able to use a 1 gallon jug and pre-mix the water, drain the container your fish is in (you can put him in a cup with some old water temporarily, I hope he's warm, that should help keep him comfortable ) and fill it up to the point you want to then gradually acclimatize him to the water. You can keep the rest of the mix later on (should he make progress and you want to top his water up) or another water change later.

He'll need daily 100% water changes while you treat him to replenish the salts. He may poo a little more than usual as magnesium sulphate/epsom salt acts as an internal cleanser, it may help ease his discomfort and remove the blockage.
