Oh yeah! When I can finally afford my 5-gal I'm going bare bottom on it with a bunch of fake plants. Maybe even put gravel or sand in half of it and add live plants.
Or put gravel in the big one and make the old one a bare bottom for a new betta ;)
You guys all inspire me so much, thanks for the info! :D

I have black diamond substrate from Tractor supply.

It's very fine and dark so the poop doesn't show and the poop doesn't sink in between.

Hold the gravel vac slightly above the top of the black diamond and it's fine.

Also I use a turkey baster for touch ups 2.5 and 5 gallon tanks so shallow and easy access.

Another advantage of bare-bottomed tanks is being able to keep an eye on feces. To me, that's an important part of careful husbandry.

A lot depends on what kind of live plants you like. Anubias and floaters for me. Makes cleaning and refilling easy.

BettaQ, you're using coal slag as substrate? I'm going within 10 minutes of that store this weekend. I'm going to drop by since I talked to the managers for 15 minutes. Should be fun.

Time to get more anubias.

I'm not fond of the bare bottom look, but it's definitely easier for cleanup & observing the fishie's processing capabilities.
