Sand and marbles?

I've taken a liking to the black sand that I see in some tanks, and I'm interested in using it in my 5 gallon where Pudge is now.

I also happen to have about $10 worth of marbles in there (the flat ones) and I'm not too keen on removing them, especially since my next tank I hope will be with corys, so I have to use sand.

Is it possible to do half and half?

I know I need the vacumn to help because it makes it easier, but what exactly do you have to do with the vacuum and what's the average cost?

I'm not getting the sand yet, I'm going to wait a decent amount of time, but I'm curious for the long run so I can buy it and not worry.
