Got my tank yesterday!!

I got the Marineland 20 g kit at Petsmart yesterday on sale for $93.99 and considering the 10 g kit is $89.99, I figure I got a pretty good deal. I'm waiting to get my stand so I can set it up and start cycling. At least I have a bit of a leg up in the cycling process because my LFS will gift me some seeded media from their established show tank. I'm excited!
Now my question is sorority, divided boys (not too keen) or community with either single boy or sorority. Opinions regarding tankmates are very welcome. I'm seriously considering pool filter sand for substrate and yes, it will be planted.

Can you tell I'm excited?

Congrats on your new tank, that sounds like a pretty good deal for sure! I'm planning on doing a sorority in my 20 gallon (once I get it set up... my 5.5 gallon is taking precedence right now)... maybe five girls and a handful of cories.

I'm curious about a planted tank, because I am thinking I might want to plant my 5.5 gallon. Do you have to use sand in a planted tank, or could I use gravel?

I would definitely go sorority community! I'm desperate for space to have a 20 gallon (or more) sorority, as they seem so entertaining. But for now, I'm ok with mysmall single male betta communities.

You can use gravel for a planted tank but Im not sure about substrate for an NPT. Im considering PFS because Im considering getting corydoras and sand is more natural for them. Its also easier to clean because the refuse stays on top and doesnt sink as it does with gravel.

Sounds nice I really like and have a 5 gallon Marineland tank. I like the sorority idea also I would use sand it looks so nice I think I wish I had used sand instead of gravel, may change over sometime.
