what causes parasites (swollen belly) in bettas?

Housing
What size is your tank? 2.5 gal
What temperature is your tank? 82
Does your tank have a filter? yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? no
Is your tank heated? yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? 0

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? betta pellets
How often do you feed your betta fish? 1 or 2x /day

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change? every 2 or 3 weeks
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 40
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? betta water dechlorinator,, sometimes aquarium salt.

usually using live food, not cleaning water properly.introducing another fish into water that is already carrying parasites,.

since you dont know ur water parameters i would change the water a little more often.did u cycle the tank?or just set it up with the filter and then added the fish rite away?

Don't just assume it's parasites. Bloating can have several causes - bacterial infection being a major one, as well as dietary/constipation issues and even tumours.

Looking at your water change schedule -- which is not enough for that tank size, you really need to change your water twice a week at least -- I would say you're probably looking at a bacterial infection brought on by poor water conditions. But really, we need more info.

What's his poop like? How's he swimming? If you give us all these and more obversations on his health/behaviour, it'll help figuring out what exactly is wrong with him so you're not bombarding an already ill fish with stressful and unnecessary meds.
