Quick math question.

Hey, soI'm doing math andf its been all summer, and like I forget, if you have a problem like ummm -9= 10x + 5(x+9)-7 and you want to divide by 10 to get rid of the 10x do you divide the rest of the problem by 10 too, or just x? I know if its 10x times the rest of the problem you dont, but.. yeah.

I would have asked on y/a but i think I woul dhave gotten distracted while I was there :P I have REALLY bad adhd

ALSO say you have -9=8(x+9)-5 what the hek do you start with? I can't concentrate, just give me the first step?

ooooh, that makes my head hurt looking at it! I'm sooo happy math wasn't mandatory after gr. 11, I dropped it 5 years ago and never looked back...

Pogthefish, if you have -9= 10x + 5(x+9)-7, you cannot divide by 10 until you have isolated the 10x. Then you divide BOTH sides by 10. So, yes. You are correct. :)
For example, I am assuming you are solving for x, yes? If you are, then here are the steps to take:

Step one (multiply 5(x+9)) so that you get:

-9=10x + 5x+45 - 7

Step two (add up the numbers and add up the numbers with x):

-47 = 15x (I passed all the numbers to the left side of the equal sign)

Step three (divide BOTH sides by 15):

-47/15 = 15x/15

Step four (simplify):

-47/15 = x (15/15 becomes 1) :)
