Needless to say I wont be introducing Alpha until I'm sure the tank is healthy.
that sounds like a HORRIBLE fungal infection my community tank had...it killed a king betta, two mollies and a platy before i got it under control. do you use aquarium salt? it's a wonderful preventative for both fungal and bacterial infections. you might want to quarantine everyone from the tank, give it a good full-service cleaning, salt the water and apply some Jungle, and then slowly start to reintroduce those fish you are certain are healthy. any sick fish you should treat with jungle or maracin, and once they're 100% healthy reintroduce them.

I bought some aquarium salt from the pet store and have added it to the tank. How often should it be added? How will I know if its working?

I also added a piece of lightly algaed driftwood for the pleco. And hopefully to help the good bacterial growth in the tank.

Any other suggestions?

add the salt every time you do a water change...the packaging we use says 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons, so add one tsp if you do a 50% change on a 10g.
