Fancy Goldfish - advice, please?

I'll save some cash and use veggies. Plus, teenage girl buying baby food, don't want to get those looks. -sigh-

Since Aus said yes, I'd love some recipes for young goldfish.
I was thinking to get ice cube trays for my carnivores and these guys, no cutting involved. xD

They would have to be pretty small ice cube trays! With gel food you want to feed two to three mouthfuls a meal. For my large calico, that comes out to be a looooot more than my newest little ryukin. I cut my baby's food into big cubes, and then I cut the big cubes into bit sizes when I feed him. Cutting is kinda unavoidable. I even keep a knife and cutting board next to my fish tank. Who knows, maybe I'll get a kitchen solely for my fish one day!

For the recipe I gave you, all you need to do to make it "young goldfish" food is add more salmon. I use about a 2 oz (drained) can of salmon rather than the 1.5 oz. I also forgot, you can add 1/4 cup of chopped veggies to the mix. I like to add spinach in there as it helps keep my ryukin (and your pearlscales) a little less floaty. But you could also put zuchini, kale, or other leafy green veggies. Avoid things like broccoli and green beans as those can make goldfish gassy.

EDIT: I forgot!! I had an experience with buying baby food. I got... those looks. But not too many of them because around here it's pretty common for teenagers to have kids.

The world's oldest captive goldfish has died peacefully in his bowl, 43 years after he was won as a prize at a funfair.
Tish the goldfish achieved fame late in life after being recognized by the Guinness Book of Records only last year.

He was found dead at the bottom of his bowl earlier this week after a short illness.

Tish was buried in a yoghurt carton at the bottom of his owner Hilda Hand's garden.

Golden oldie

Mrs Hand, 72, of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, said she had become close to Tish over the years.

"Goldfish are supposed to have a four-second memory, but I'm sure Tish recognized me," she said.

"He always knew when it was feeding time and I used to talk to him."

As word of Tish's longevity spread, he "became something of a celebrity", she said.

"People always used to ask how Tish was doing. I don't think we will be getting another one.

"We couldn't replace Tish, he was part of the family."

Mrs Hand's son, Peter, won Tish, along with another goldfish, Tosh, playing roll-a-penny at a funfair in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in 1956.

His parents took on the fish after Peter married and left home. Tosh died in 1975.

In 1998 the fish took the longevity title from Fred, a Worthing goldfish who died in 1980 aged 41.

Although his age could not be verified by biological tests, the Guinness Book of Records investigators were persuaded there was nothing fishy about the claims and recognized his status.

In later life, Tish faded from bright orange to a distinguished silver, but remained healthy until shortly before his death.

Mr Hand said the secret of his long life was not being overfed, and being put in the sun occasionally.

The 11.5cm fish had a habit in his earlier days of trying to jump out of his bowl, and was kept safe by a net placed over the top.

However, there have been reports (None official) of types of carp (Actually gold fish hybrids) in Japan which have lived to be more than 70 years old.


So yeah, i believe with the effort you and your daughter put in your fishy friends you will have them for a long long long time.

Olympia is right; this was a common goldfish. The fancies don't usually hit 20 even with great care. Their warped shape (that is oh so adorable) does give them health problems. But 15 years is still a lot longer than most people expect of goldfish.

The last line of the article irks me. Koi (a color variant of the common carp Cyprinus carpio) are not goldfish hybrids; they are two distinct species. The ages of outdoor fish in temperate climates can be scientifically verified. I've even done it a few times (on fish that I was working on in school not my pet fish).
