Identification of Speckles please.

I just got this betta at the pet shop. I was wondering if anyone could give me a more specific information on the fish. I know my pics aren't the greatest. Sorry. Anyway the pet shop owner swore this fish was a male? and a hm, just a young one. Thank you in advance.

male vs female

How many pencil widths tall is its body?

The scale speckles are common on cambodian interbred betta. Cambodians are generally the ones with one solid body color and a different color set on their fins but I've seen rare large-splotch cambodians where nearly goldfish/koi like areas of multiple colors appear, like calico cats.

The blackened splotches are usually nothing more than skin spots or occasionally healed nips from their time as a fry.

To determine male vs female, look for a little white protrusion behind the pectoral fins (the droopy ones by the gills) and check to see if there's an additional tissue behind the gill covers that connects all the way down to the rear of the lower jaw (where the sides curve forward towards the front on the bottom of the jaw). If there is a white dot it is female.
Don't despair if it is, girls try harder at being your friend.

Males almost always have the entire gill cover free to move and girls commonly only have "cheek flaps" that hinge/pop out.

Just a hair over one pencil width tall not including fins. I am hoping I measured right.

I might need a diagram to understand everything else. lol

I'm thinking that's a girl.. Could be wrong since I'm looking through my iPod touch but I do know that's not an hm. You have a beautiful VT :)

I do see an egg spot. Unless her ventrals grow much longer... It's safe to label Speckles as a pretty young lady.

thank you. she does appear to be a female to me too. in fact i asked the store owner if she was a female and she told me no this was a male. its ok though because she is a very friendly fish and watches me all the time. she seems very healthy too. i am glad because the first betta I got passed away after three days, but I got him from walmart.
