aggressive female betta

i got a female betta in an otherwise peaceful tank containing a male betta. as she's grown, she's become very aggressive and is slowly ripping the male to shreds. I thought they weren't like that. she even flairs her gills. what's up with all that?

Males and females aren't compatible in the same tank. You need to rehome one of them quickly.

I agree with what SST said. The only time they should be in the same tank is when the male has already built a bubble nest and the female is very well conditioned and fat with eggs. At that point you can introduce the female just long enough to breed and then get her out of there. The male will take care of the nest and if you leave the female in the tank he will attack her. The male betta is an excellent parent but does not tolerate his own species well at all.
