Water smells like fish?

So what does it mean when the water starts to smell fishy? o.o

I'm doing a water change tomorrow (I'm way too busy to do one today), and the last change was Sunday. I haven't had the tank smell so fast, not even Buddha's smelled!

But the 5 gallon is smelling and I feel bad for my room mate if it gets worse :(

Well im pretty sure most tanks have a fish smell.. But can you smell it without being inches away? O.o

Do you siphon the gravel? If you have a filter- do you swish it in used tank water frequently? I'm wondering if maybe theres some food or yucky build up somewhere... O.o

I'm about a foot away, and I can smell it.

Like, I'm actually tempted to do a water change at this very moment.

And I don't have a siphon or vacuumn. I want to make a trip to the petstore sometime soon.

But it could be food.

Almost all of my tanks have a fishy smell when I'm right over top of them. They only smell really bad when I've drained them. Has your water level dropped farther than usual? This could be causing the smell.

I'd say it dropped about half an inch. Is that normal?

How much does it usually drop between water changes? I have tanks where it can drop an inch in a week. I open the tops on those and the room really starts to get fishy!

And I also have a feeling the overdue water change has something to do with it, too.

That's interesting....Sometimes I put my nose right up to the water to see if it smells and I never smell anything!
