Unhappy Algae issues, help please!!

I have been having issues with dark green stringy algae, mostly in filter media and hanging out of filter and off the tops of plants.I have only recently had this problem. it is a 2.5 gallon and i do atleast one 50% or more water change a week, depending on debre on bottom. It has a filter and a heater and only one betta. I want to get rid of the algae as it is really unattractive and annoying, anyone with any suggestions they are welcome. i discovered on inetrnet that i might be able to boil decorations or something, however i really don't want to start the tank all over again, as it has only been going for a couple of months and i don't really want to have my fish cycyle the tank all over again. he is very happy in there and this new problem is very frustrating, help please.

You could try moving your tank away from windows and perhaps reducing the number of hours the light is on. Also you can take your fish out and use some hydrogen peroxide on the algae. The hydrogen peroxide should kill the algae. Basically water is H20, and hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. After it comes in contact with the algae it should release Oxygen and turn into water. So your water will be safe after using it and no water change will be necessary unless you want to remove the dead algae.
