Handmade Ceramics, Yes or No?

I have read mixed reviews about putting handmade ceramics in an aquarium. A friend got me a lovely, large mug and I think it would look good in Bradbury's tank. The mug is food safe of course but I don't think it is dishwasher safe. The batteries in my camera died or I would post a picture.

Chemicals safe to humans are dangerous to fish.

I tried an unfinished ceramic mini vase in my tank..you know the white kind...big mistake..turned all chalky..I figured if it was meant to put plants in, it could get wet..nope!

Maybe test it? Put it in a bucket or something and use a water testing kit if you have one to see if it messes with pH and stuff?
I'm no expert though so I don't know if that will be good for any chemicals that might leech :o

That is a good idea. As you pointed out, I'm not sure if the test kit will pick up leeching chemicals but I'll look into it.

Yeah, its worth a try. It's better to be safe than sorry though, so if you're not sure after testing it, then I wouldn't use it :)

Why not use simple ceramic pots used to house plants and the like? Or even coconuts? Both are tried and safe.

I make ceramics for a living and I've had a small vase I made in my fish tank for about a year now. My fishy has been fine. ^^ As long as the item has no lead it in and its not greenware it should be fine.

And if its food safe it most definitely should be dishwasher safe... unless its not really food safe. =/

Pardon my ignorance but what is greenware?
