I just tried to feed a blood worm to my new betta this morning, and he wants nothing to do with it. I eventually took it out and carefully placed a few floating pellets in a corner, and he quickly devoured them all.

I'm no expert, but I believe you can identify stress through discoloration, heavy breathing and strange "depressed" behavior.
Ah, well he's not having heavy breathing, discoloration, or strange behavior. He explores his tank and then comes over to see me when I go up to his tank. :]

Sounds like he is adjusting to his new home and should soon begin to eat, lot of new Bettas will not eat for awhile and will not starve dont worry to much they can go a couple of weeks without eating. Yes just soak the pellet in some garlic juice and see if he goes for it. You could try some New Life Betta pellets they already have garlic in them and are one of the bets foods on the market right now. Good luck and welcome to the forum any questions you have feel free to ask there are so many nice people here always willing to help !

New Life Spectrum Betta Formula, the 1st or 2nd best in the Betta Food world. :P I bought mine at eBay and it's one of the highest quality pellets. Mine was around $8 plus shipping.

The bump is called the "caudal penducle" and it is a part of the betta anatomy. I would be worried if he didn't have one lol.
