Finally got the api test kit...

and I tested what is supposed to be my cycled 10 gallon. I've only used strips before, and the tank has been set up for over 8 months.

nitrite and nitrate were 0, and ammonia was like .25. Did I do something wrong, or is this true? I did a 50% water change on monday like I do every week.

Also, do you just pour the used test water down the drain?

Do a water change and see what happens, test dechlorinated tap water as well that hasn't been in the tank.

the tap water gave the same result. It really didn't have the green in it that the .25 showed, but it wasn't the dark yellow that the chart showed either.

Hm... What's the stock? And the tested water, you just pour it out in the drain. If your tank is cycled, ammonia wouldn't have shown up.

There's 3 males in the 10 gallon. I'll correct myself and say that it wasn't really green like it shows .25 on the chart. It just wasn't dark yellow.. more of a light yellow. The latest fish was added about 3 weeks ago, and I always do a 50 % water change.

8 months should be plenty of been more then enough time to cycle and you should be showing no ammonia. This may seem like a stupid question..but I have to ask...do you have a filter?

Be sure and clean those test tubes and rinse them out alot ! I had a couple of high readings cause I didnt rinse them enough or at least I think thats what happened cause when I cleaned and rinsed them out again and retested it was fine.

Yes I have a filter, and it's the same one that's been in there for the 8 months. Same cartridge too, and it's not even falling apart.

I didn't rinse the tubes before testing the first time, but I'm glad that you told me to rinse well after each use.

Funny. When I first got my Api I had tanks set up for 2+ months. I tested all my tanks and wondered if my tests were faulty because they tested perfectly... still wonder to this day LOL

are there plants in your tabk. they're usually culprits if you see 0 reading on the nitrate. I dunno where the Ammonia would come from though :/
