If it's not yet cycled, just do 2 50% changes until it is. If not filtered, you do a 100% and a 50% per week. It's true you need to clean it more often but it's worth it for the Betta.
Yup...I think the 2.5 is very easy to maintain, only takes me about 10 minutes to do a water change on it. I keep two 1g jugs of conditioned water ready at room temp, and it is nice and lightweight.

Welcome to the forum! and a 2.5 gal is large enough and with regular water changes you don't need a filter but i recommend a adjustable heater for a small tank and no more than 50 watts some people do use bigger but this is what i recommend though can't wait to see your bettas!

After reading and reading, I think I'm going to go with no filter on the smaller tank, especially since I'll be upgrading to a larger tank as soon as I can.

This leaves me with a question about the filter situation for the divided 10 gallon tank. Will one filter do, or should I get two smaller filters and put one on each side?

I'll be picking up heaters for both tanks very soon.

1 filter for the 10 gallon should be fine, 2 filters would be a little stressing don't you think?
