Lighting

I'm ordering a hood for my 5.5 gallon tank. I've chosen this one:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Produc...fm?pcatid=3785

It comes with an 8 watt bulb. I'd like to add live plants eventually to my tank to give it the all natural feel, instead of neon green and neon red silk plants O.o

Is this a good bulb? Or should I order it and just get a replacement bulb? I like the price of this one a lot better than most of them. >.>

Thanks :D

What kind of plants are you hoping to have? I am new to planted tanks myself, but from what I understand you will only be able to grow the very hardy plants with that kind of light. I just got a different kind of lid for my new 10g, I am just using one of the screen lids and I have one of the T5 energy efficient strip lights suspended above it. The light was a little pricey, but the screen lid is far more secure than the hood I have on my other tank that has spaces where the filter and cords are ya know.

And couple it with this cover to reduce evaporation:

Or you could get a work light from home depot and pu a CFL in it.

Much cheaper!

Hey bettaqi next time could you use the edit feature? It kind of clusters the thread. Also the glass might get dirty or gets water on it reducing the light intensity. That is why I like open tops. Just personal preference though.

You would be fine with low light plants with that bulb. Which is fine because usually care for them tend to be easy to grow.

Hi LizzyP,
According to me this bulb is very nice so you can order this bulb. This bulb is better for aquarium, I also use this bulb in my aquarium so if you want to know any more about this bulb than ask me so I give you best suggestion.
