Nitrites too high!

I have been cycling my 20-gallon tank since late August. The ammonia has reached around 0 ppm, but the nitrites have shot through the roof with no signs of lowering. The nitrate is very low, about .25 ppm.

The filter has media in it (new stuff, not from an old tank). How can I get the nitrites down? My area has a history of higher-than-average ammonia levels in the water. Could this be the reason?

nitrAtes will be showing up soon to eat the nitrItes. As soon as you get 0 ammonia & 0 nitrItes and 20-40 nitrAtes you're cycled.

Nitrites over 3ppm probably won't complete a cycle in a new tank.

Stir your bottom rock and do a water change.

A full water change or something like a 20 percent water change?

If you've allowed your nitrite to get as high as 3.0ppm, you're obviously doing a fishless cycle which, as Thunderloon says, is beginning to stall. Change >50% to get your nitrite in a reasonable range. Then dose you ammonia back up >2.0ppm. You're almost there.
