Bettas can live with many other fish. If the other fish is about their same body size such as a platy would be, they will get along fine. If you put them with very small fish they will sometimes think of the other fish as food. If you put them with aggressive or large fish, they will end up being the victims of the larger fish. Swords, platies, rasboras, black neons, mollies and similar size and disposition fish will get along fine with a betta.

I'd worry a little bit about mid-dwellers. Bettas can be quite nippy. On the other hand, lots of people make it work. It really depends on the personality of the betta, so it's good to keep a careful eye out when adding other fish.

On the other hand, bottom dwellers get along quite well with bettas, as they really don't occupy the same space. Especially if it's well planted with lots of hiding spots. I'd recommend corys, small plecos or loaches.
