changing filters

I read on my filter instructions that the filter needs to be changed every 4 weeks is this true? also once I've changed the filter does the tank need to cycle again?

and another question.. can and does anyone keep an algae eater with their betta?

what filter is it ?
if you change it to a new one then you will be forever going
through a cycle.usually the sponges just need to be rinsed in
old tank water.

Most filters have more than one sponge in them. It's best to change one every week or so than all at a time, and they rarely actually need to be changed, a rinse in tank water is fine.
