Tank Cycling

I recently bought a betta fish, but I wasn't aware of the tank cycling process until now. Right now, my betta is in a 1 gallon tank. I just bought a 5 gallon tank so I will be doing the cycling in there. First of all, should I keep my betta in the 1 gallon during the process or is it ok to put him in the 5 gallon? I also bought test kits for amonia, nitrite, a heater, thermometer, and I have BettaSafe water conditioner that I've been using. Will I need anything else? Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to do this?

You can add him but you will have to do a lot of extra water changes.
