aquarium salt question

OK so I picked up some AQ salt today (decided not to chance using the non-iodized sea salt) but I was wondering should I only use it if hes sick or can it be used in small amounts continuously and if so how much would I need for a 2gal unfiltered tank? he seems perfectly healthy right now, just wondering for future reference and also wanted to know what are the benefits of it?

i salt all my betta/tropical tanks. it's a good preventative for a lot of different infections and illnesses your fish can get. do NOT add extra except at water changes, and to treat a sick fish, the stuff won't evaporate or absorb in your filter, so if you keep adding it needlessly, you'll end up pickling your fish.

You don't want to use it 24/7 or more than 10 days for fish. It will start hurting their organs so you'll end hurting them. Not a really good preventative IME.

I use it to treat fin rot and help them heal from tail biting

I use only when needed.. if needed. I like my TDS or the solids in my water to be no more that it has to be. Too much salt or salt too long and you run risk of dehydrating the fish as it draws stuff out of the fish. Plus you build a tolerance for it with disease. Do some Google searches on osmoregulation.

Here is a great article on the benefits and dangers of using aquarium salt, from Practical Fish Keeping magazine: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.u...t.php?sid=2850
