when do you consider your bred fish your own?

Not sure if I am using the right words. I am buying a pair of fish from a breeder and hopefully will have successful spawns from them. But if I breed his fish and produce nice fish can I really call them my nice fish? I mean all I did was breed the fish that I bought from another breeder.

By the same reasoning the breeder bought their ancestors from someone else. So its not their spawn too?

Nah, breeding is not only pairing them, its also raising and caring for the fry till, they reach their new homes.

I see why you're hesitant, if I bought a pair from a breeder I wouldn't feel like I had contributed anything in the way of improved genetics or anything. I guess if it were me, I'd need to breed their spawn before they felt like mine, as I would be the one selecting for traits at that point. But if I buy two fish from different breeders and breed them, then their offspring already feel like "mine" because I selected for traits in their parents. Does that make sense?

I suppose I wouldn't consider myself to have an actual "line" until I was getting colors and form to breed true.

Honestly.. The breeder raised the pair themselves.. So they are His fish.. But when you breed the pair and get nice fish out of the spawn... Well the original breeder didn't make the decision to breed those fish that you bought did s/he? The original breeder didn't raise the fry from YOUR spawn did s/he? So once you have raised the fry yourselves you can proclaim them as your fish but I still think its generous to give credit to the original breeder of the parents if the same breeder produced the fish because you didn't improve his/her line as a Breeder almost never sells there best fish

Think of it as buying from the Manapua Van to buy candy, you paid for that candy to for yourself and yours to eat. Are you going to give it back when they want it back since you already paid for it?

They are definitely YOUR fish. But you can't call them your line just yet because you only continued it. But once you cross breed and create different color/pattern or even improve general form - then you can say it's your line.
